Our progress between 2001 2003


Internal Communication
In order to set internal communication on a healthy basis an "Employee Profile Determination" survey has been carried out. The aim was to learn about employees' environmental consciousness, priority of environmental concerns at national and global scale, confidence in information sources, environmental impacts of chemical and other industries. Obtained data is statistically evaluated.
All employees, in groups, received "Responsible Care Awareness" training .
Environmental aspects are determined with contribution of employees. Awareness and consciousness training programs are planned related to significant environmental aspects.
* Slogan contest open to participation of all employees

A slogan contest is organized to reveal how employees perceive Responsible Care philosophy and how they connect it with company's activities; to direct them to think about Responsible Care implementation and feel themselves as a vital element of the applications.

* Primary Education
Support to Kazanlı Primary School
In 2002; two additional classrooms are constructed as well as general repair of primary school of Kazanlı where our production site is located.
Painting Contest
2Subject "Nature and Environmet"
n 2002 and 2003, painting contests are organized covering Mersin District primary school students in three different categories. Prize ceremony is held in World Environment Week.

University- Industry Relationship;
to form the concept of Responsible Care in the minds of future chemical and environmental engineers
Seminar series at Mersin University "Responsible Care and Applications in Soda Sanayii A.Ş." A seminar series is organized in cooperation with Mersin University Environmental Engineering Department to inform future environmental engineers about industry and its intersection with environment, to convey codes of Responsible Care Management Practices and their applications in Soda Sanayii A.?. and to share how we define environmental aspects-impacts-objectives and targets . A comprehensive site visit followed the seminars.
Responsible Care Courses at Istanbul Technical University
"Environment Health and Safety in Chemical Industry " has become a compulsory course in 2002-2003 at Istanbul Technical University Department of Chemical Engineering after being elective in previous academic year. Soda Sanayii A.Ş. representatives tutored "Responsible Care and Environmental Management" section of the courses.

Provided direct contribution to preparation of "Best Available Technique Reference Document for SODA" as required by EU's Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive, IPPC

Soda Sanayii A.Ş. is represented at board level and provides active participation in the association's activities
Participation in V. National Chemical Industry Congress and its follow up congress
Participation in revision of Responsible Care Implementation Guide within TCMA Environmental Group

Soda Sanayii A.Ş. is represented in DETEK with active participation.
Contribution to joint studies with Turkish Leather Industrialists Association
Participation to International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists Society (IULTCS)'s 27. International Leather Congress in Mexico between 28 May - 1 June 2003. DETEK's membership to IULTCS as Turkey's representative has been accepted. DETEK has received privilege of organizing 2006 European Leather Congress in Turkey. Information concerning activities of International Union of Environment Commission has been received.

TURKISH LEATHER INDUSTRY BASIC CHROMIUM SULPHATE USAGE CONTROL STUDY
A Marketing Department Leather Chemicals Development Laboratory joint study has been carried out in 99 tanneries from six different leather production regions.

Turkish Music Community Activities
Turkish Music and Turkish Folk Music Choruses; founded in 2001 with participation of employees and their family members; perform concerts every year and the revenue is donated to charitable foundations.

Four performances at Mersin Cultural Center on behalf of Homeless Children; Foundation for Supporting Contemporary Living and Çankaya Occupational Training Center for Mentally Retarded Children
Two performances at Gaziantep Cultural Center on behalf of Foundation for Supporting Contemporary Living
Performance named "Respect to Atatürk" at
"İŞ Art & Culture Center" in İstanbul on behalf of "İstanbul Children of Hope Association"
By means of income from performances: workshops for skill development for mentally retarded children were modernized and support for teaching how to read and write to 50 homeless children and scholarship to some students in-need are provided


Targets for 2004-2006

To provide Responsible Care and practical Environmental Management System training to senior students in cooperation with Mersin University Environmental Engineering Department
To start "Open Doors" activity in 2004 for schools
To organize a Responsible Care seminar open to participation of other industrial enterprises, universities and related official and non-governmental organizations of the region.
