Our progress between 2001 2003

Environmental Protection and Pollution Prevention Group ; one of the five Responsible Care implementation groups; functioned as ISO 14000 study group and established main elements of the system.
Environmental aspects and impacts are determined and ranked according to degree of impact; objectives and targets are set and environmental management programs are formed.
Although Kromsan Chromium Chemicals Plant has wastewater discharge licence and its wastewater treatment facility is capable to meet legal limits; a new and totally closed system wastewater treatment plant with "0.0 Chromium discharge" "was erected. All surface and storm waters are directed to new system.
On-line monitoring of discharge quality of Kromsan Chromium Chemicals Plant wastewater treatment system is enabled.
All wastewater connections of Kromsan plant are reinvestigated and a new layout is formed.
Idle stacks of Kromsan Plant are demolished to maintain visual harmony with the environment.
All solid process wastes of Kromsan Plant are recycled to process and the result is uniform solid waste.
Waste Management Plan is established, waste areas are arranged; a closed storage area for temporary storage of hazardous waste is built.
Facility and pipeline to meet 1500 m /h water requirement of Soda Plant from Tarsus Berdan River are built. Shifting the water source from groundwater resulted substantial increase in raw water quality and subsequent reduction in water treatment chemicals consumption. Project will contribute to gradual increase in ground water quality.
ENERGY RECOVERY
Utilization ofaste heat in greenhouses

Mersin Kazanlı, neighbourood of Soda Sanayii A.Ş, is a rather developed area in greenhouse farming with 10.000 acressof land dedicated to greenhouses. Product output and quality is not as high as it canbe due lack of heating systems.

A project to transfer the energy of two different sources of Soda Plant is being evalueted.Waste heat will be transferred to clean water and hot water will be pomped directly to greenhouses as a heating media.Project will serve two different purposes; energy conservation and contribution to economic development of the region
WASTE RECOVERY
Material which has not completed its combustion in lime furnaces os Soda Plant is recycled. A "reduction at source" and "recyling" application is succesfully put in to use.
Utilization of CO2 in stack emissions
In pH adjustment of wastewater from Soda Ash Plant; acid is replaced with CO2 in stack gas.Decreasein CO2 emission is achieved as well as removing acid consumption.

Targets for 2004-2006

ISO 14001 certification of Kromsan and Soda Plants
Monitoring environmental pollution prevention performance in a way to cover all related aspects and to enable statistical evaluation of data
Reducing ammonia consumption parameter in Soda production
Continuation of technology modification studies to become well prepared to possible legislation revisions in European Union concerning solid wastes of Soda production process
