TANKROM®AB
Tankrom®AB, is an
inorganically reduced (with SO2) conventional
basic chromium sulphate complex, in powder form.
Owing to strong sulphate masking,
Tankrom®AB
is at anionic character which is important for the
quality of the product. Thus,
Accelerates
chromium penetration.
As
a result of fast and irregular basification, possibility
of appearance of irregular chromium oxide distribution
on the cross section and the grain of the leather
is prevented by anionic character of Tankrom®AB.
When Tankrom®AB
is used in powder form, it is at anionic character
(negative charged) and penetrates into the pelt
without interaction with negatively charged groups
of collagen. Anionic character is gradually
transformed into cationic character. During this
transformation, chromium complexes are fixed to
the carboxyl groups of collagen. Fixation is accelerated
and completed by basification.

APPLICATION
Tankrom®AB
is readily soluble even in cold water and should
be used in powder form. In main tanning and retanning,
Tankrom®AB
can be applied to all kinds of leather and is used
6-10% on pelt weight for pickled hide and skin and
15-25 g/L for pickled double-face (fur).
For successful chrome tanning, some
tanning conditions such as bath length, bath temperature,
basification and tanning time are important besides
the type and amount of basic chromium sulphate used.
Some of our advices are as follows:
Low
bath length should be preferred as much as possible,
in order to accelerate penetration and to raise
final temperature and chrome exhaustion.
Since
penetration is encouraged by low bath temperature;
starting temperature of tanning should be 15-20OC
and temperature should be raised gradually to 35-40OC
at the end of the chrome tanning by mechanical action
or heating system of the drum.
Depending
on the type and thickness of hide, basification
should start within 30-90 minutes and should be
completed before the 4 th hour of chrome tanning.
Thus, maximum chromium oxide exhaustion and homogeneous
chrome distribution is obtained.
If
sodium bicarbonate is used for basification process,
since it has strong alkaline character, it should
be diluted at least at the rate of 1/10 in cold
water and should be added slowly in small portions
into the tanning bath. Using magnesium oxide based
basification agent in basification process offers
some advantages for standardization and ease of
basification.
Chrome
tanning time should be at least 8 hours for high
chrome exhaustion. After the end of that time, as
no special supervision is required, the chrome tannage
may be allowed to proceed automatically
during evening and night hours.
Drum
can be drained, after checking pH value of bath
and wet-blue.
